Ohio Vally Hoops Classic

@ Hillsboro HS

vs. Sidney

won 63-44 1-0  

Mason boys basketball opened their season with a 63-44 win over Sydney HS at the Ohio Valley Hoops Showcase this past Saturday. After both teams staying even after the first quarter, Mason outscored their opponent 20-9 in the 2nd frame to build an insurmountable lead.

The Comet got balanced scoring from three players to earn the win; Landen Long 15, Matt Minick and Mitchell Greer 11.

Next up Mason will host Kings in their home season opener on Tuesday, Dec. 4th.

 
12/4 Kings won 61-43 2-0 0-0

The Comet boys defeated visiting Kings 61-43 on Tuesday night in a non-conference affair. Mason raced out to a first quarter 16-4 lead and never looked back.

Ethan Howard led Mason with 17 points. Matt Minick grabbed 11 rebounds.

The Comets will host Colerain this Friday night before going on the road till after winter break.

 
12/7 Colerain won 79-64 3-0 1-0

Mason boys basketball saw four of its players contribute double digit scoring to defeat Colerain last Friday 79-64. The Comets built a solid lead going into the final quarter to grab win #1 in the GMC.

Leaders for Mason: Landen Long and Mitch Greer 18, Ethan Howard 16 and Jack Cooper/Matt Minick 10. Cooper made it a double-double with 14 rebounds on the night.

Mason goes to 3-0 overall and will visit Sycamore on Tuesday night.

 
12/11 @ Sycamore won 61-36 4-0 2-0

Mason ran their record to 4-0 on Tuesday with a defeat of Sycamore by a score of 61-36. The Comets built a 27-10 lead by halftime then held off the Aves in the final 16 minutes.

Landen Long led Mason with 17 points. Ethan Howard and Matt Minick added 10. Jack Cooper grabbed 12 rebounds and Minick had a double-double with 10 caroms.

Next up, Mason will visit Fairfield on Friday, Dec. 14th.

 
12/14 @ Fairfield won 65-42 5-0 3-0

Mason boys basketball stayed undefeated on their young season with a 65-42 win at Fairfield this past Friday. The Comets ran out to a 29-11 first half lead and led the rest of the way.

Landen Long was the Mercy Player of the Game with 25 points.

Next up Mason (5-0,3-0) visits Middletown on Friday, Dec. 22nd.

 
12/21 @ Middletown won 71-55 6-0 4-0

Below are recaps from results that occurred over the recent Holiday Break:

Mason defeated Middletown 71-55 on Friday, Dec. 21st. Three Comets scored in double figures: Jack Cooper 19 (11 rebounds), Landen Long 16 and Matt Minick 15.

 
12/28 @ Loveland Holiday Tourney won 65-48 7-0 4-0 The Comets played in the Loveland Holiday Tourney on Dec. 28th. Mason defeated host Loveland 65-48 on the opening night. Leading Mason were Landen Long 16 points, Jack Cooper 14 and Mitchell Greer 12.

@ Loveland Holiday Tourney

vs. Springboro

won 63-53 8-0 4-0 Mason earned another non-conference win in the 2nd evening of the Loveland Holiday tourney on Saturday, Dec. 29th. The Comets defeated Springboro 63-53 to stay undefeated on the seasonat 8-0. Two Mason players scored in double numbers: Landen Long 19 and Matt Minick 14.  
1/4 Oak Hills lost 53-49 8-1 4-1

The Comets lost their first game of the season on Friday, Jan. 4th to visiting Oak Hills. Final score 53-49. Mason fought from behind in the second half but couldn't complete the come back. The team was led by Matt Minick's 16 points and 9 rebounds and Landen Longs 14.

Mason (8-1, 4-1) will visit league leader Princeton on Tuesday, Jan. 8th.

 
1/8 @ Princeton won 49-40 9-1 5-1

The Comets earned a BIG GMC win over previously unbeaten (GMC) Princeton on Tuesday night by a score of 49-40. The win puts Mason in a 2nd place tie in the league at 5-1 (9-1 overall).

Leading the way for Mason was Matthew Smith with 19 points and Jack Cooper with 15.

The Comets are back in action at Lakota West this Friday night.

 
1/11 @ Lakota West won 55-46 10-1 6-1

Mason boys basketball earned their head coach another milestone win on Friday. The Comets dropped Lakota West and in so doing gave Greg Richards his 350th career win. The victory also put the Comets in a three-way tie for first place in the GMC after Lakota East was defeated by Hamilton. Oak Hills also shares the league lead, but there's a lot of basketball remaining.

Mason fought to a 30-20 half-time advantage at Lakota West's expense and then moved in front of the Firebirds 37-30 to begin the fourth quarter. The Comets put a bow on this victory with a strong final-quarter kick, outpointing the Firebirds 18-16 in the last stanza.

Matt Minick and Matt Smith led Mason with 13 and 12 points, respectively. Jack Cooper snared 10 caroms. Smith also dished out 6 assists on the night.

Mason (10-1, 6-1) will host Middletown on Tuesday, Jan. 15th.

 
1/15 Middletown won 37-30 11-1 7-1

Mason's boys basketball season stayed on course Tuesday night with a 37-30 over visiting Middletown. Neither team was able to generate much offense with a combined 40 turnoveras committed in the contest.

Mason held a slim 4 point advantage heading into the final quarter before closing the game out for another GMC win and keeping them in a tie with East for 1st in the GMC standings.

Landen Long led Mason with 13 points.

This Friday it will be a battle of the top two teams in the league when Mason (11-1, 7-1) hosts East (9-3, 7-1). It will the only meeting between the two schools this season. Tipoff is slated for 7:30 pm.

11/23 Olentangy Liberty won 67-58 1-0 0-0

The Girls Basketball team opened their 2018-19 campaign on Friday, Nov. 23rd with a tough 67-58 win over Olentangy Liberty. The Comets held off a 4th quarter come-back effort after leading most of the contest.

Mason got double digit scoring from 3 players: Sammie Puisis 23, Alanna Carter 18 and Megan Wagner 11. Wagner assisted 8 times while Puisis had a double-double with 11 carooms.

 
11/25 Toledo Rogers won 48-37 2-0 0-0

Mason Girls Bball followed up their season opener with another win versus Toledo Rogers on Sunday, Nov. 25th by a final score of 48-37. The Comets led 28-12 at the half, but saw Toledo rally back in the third quarter.

Mason was able to hold on for the win behind Sammie Puisis 22 points and Alanna Carters 14 (double-double with 11 rebounds). Marilyn Popplewell contributed 5 assists.

Next up, Mason opens up GMC play at Princeton on Saturday, Dec. 1st.

 
12/1 @ Princeton lost 35-34 2-1 0-1

Mason suffered a 35-34 loss at the hands of a resurgent Princeton in their GMC season opener on Saturday. It was the Comet girls bball program first loss to any GMC school other than Lakota West since 2014. Ironically, the Vikings were the last league opponent to tag Mason with that loss (63-52, 2/1/14).

Next up, Mason will visit Sycamore on Wednesday, Dec. 5th.

 
12/5 @ Sycamore won 44-37 3-1 1-1

Mason got their first GMC win of the season on Wednesday, defeating Sycamore 44-37. The Comets held an 8 point first half advantage then held off the Aves for the win over the final two quarters.

Megan Wagner and Marilyn Popplewell led Mason with 12 points each. Popplewell also grabbed 8 rebounds.

Next up, Mason hosts Colerain on Saturday, Dec. 8th.

 
12/8 Colerain won 61-20 4-1 2-1

Mason smashed Colerain 61-20 on Saturday. Alanna Carter led the Comets with 19 points. Megan Wagner chipped in 11and dished 6 assists. Marilyn Popplewell collected 9 rebounds.

Mason (4-1, 2-1) will visit Middletown on Wednesday, Dec. 12th.

 
12/12 @ Middletown won 65-26 5-1 3-1

Mason girls bball defeated Middletown 65-26 on Wednesday. Three Comets scored double figures: Megan Wagner 16, Alanna Carter and Marilyn Popplewell each scored 12. Grace Dawes cleaned the boards with 10 rebounds. Wagner dished 5 assists.

Next up, Mason will visit Fairfield on Saturday, Dec. 15th.

 
12/15 @ Fairfield won 53-30 6-1 4-1

Senior Sammie Puisis returned to action last Saturday to lead the Comets to a 53-30 GMC win at Fairfield. Puisis finished with 22 points and 4 steals. The Comets built a 25-12 advantage by the half and never looked back.

Mason stays on the road tonight with a game at Kettering Fairmont. They are then off over the break till January 5th when they host Oak Hills.

 
12/17 @ Fairmont lost 60-41 6-2 4-1

Mason Girls Basketball traveled to Kettering Fairmont on Monday and took a 60-41 loss from the Firebirds. The Comets fell behind early and struggled to overcome the deficit throughout the contest.

Mason was led by Alanna Carter and Sammie Puisis 14 points. Carter also snared 7 rebounds and dished 4 assists.

Mason (6-2, 4-1) girls are off till after the Holidays when they return Saturday, Jan. 5th to host Oak Hills.

 
1/5 Oak Hills won 65-37 7-2 5-1

The Mason girls basketball team returned after the holidays with an easy 65-37 win over Oak Hills. Sammie Puisis poured in 26 points to lead all scorers. Alanna Carter chipped in 16 in the effort.

The Comets (7-2, 5-1) visit district rival Lakota West (10-1, 6-1) on Wednesday night.

 
1/9 @ Lakota West lost 57-48 7-3 5-2

The Mason Girls Basketball team fell to GMC rival West on Tuesday, by a final score of 57-48. The Comet rallied for a late come-back in the fourth quarter that came up a little short in the first of two meeting between the league powerhouses. The two teams will meet again at Mason on Feb. 2nd.

Sannie Puisis led the way for Mason with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Alanna Carter added 9.

Next up for the Comets (7-3 5-2), at Hamilton on Saturday, Jan. 12th.

Saturday's contest at Hamilton was postponed due to inclement weather. Make-up TBA.

Next up Mason girls bball (7-3, 5-2) will host Lakota East on Wednesday, Jan. 16th.

 
1/16 Lakota East won 68-27 8-3 6-2

Mason crushed Lakota East 68-27 on Wednesday. Sammie Puisis had 22, Alanna Carter 12 and Megan Wagner 10.

The Comets (8-3, 6-2) are at the Classic in the Country this coming Sunday and Monday vs. Newark and Westerville South.

This past Saturday, Mason Swimming hosted perennial power Upper Arlington. The boys won 168-137 in a total team effort. See highlights below:

 



The boys were lead by double winners Adam Chaney & Carl Bloebaum. Adam won the 100 Freestyle & 100 Backstroke, while Freshman Carl Bloebaum won the 200 Freestyle & 100 Butterfly. Other winners were:

Saturday, Mason hosted perennial power Upper Arlington. The girls team won 178-137 in a total team effort. See highlights below:

 


The girls were lead by double winners Reese Lugbill & McKenzie Grau. Reese won the 200 IM & 100 Breaststroke while McKenzie Grau won the 200 & 100 Freestyle. Other winners were:

Ashley Lugbill - 500 Freestyle

Karina Ashton was our top finisher in diving finishing 3rd.

The Comets traveled to Indianapolis to compete in the Perry Meridian Falcon Duals this past Saturday.. Mason went 1-4 in the team duals. They were without a full lineup throughout the day.

Mason Wrestling hosted Moeller on senior night this past Thursday. The Comets knocked off the Crusaders 47-21. More info to come...

Next up, Mason Wrestling will participate in the Michigan Grappler Tourney this Saturday.

12/15 @ Michigan Grappler Tourney 2nd place  

Mason Wrestling headed north this past weekend and competed against 18 Teams from Michigan, Indiana, Ohio that descended on the Lansing Center, on the campus of Michigan State, for the 1st Annual Grappler Gold Wrestling Tournament. Mason was the surprise of the tournament taking 2nd place with 160 points, finishing ahead of nationally ranked Brighton, Davison, and Brownsburg among others. Evansville Mater Dei was the tournament winner edging out the Comets by 19.5 points.

The Comets head to the Dvorak Tournament near Chicago, Illinois this weekend December 22-23. 


12/22-12/23 Al Dvorak Invite    
Mason traveled to Harlem, Illinois to compete in the tough Al Dvorak Invitational on December 21st-22nd. Mason finished tied for 6th place out of 38 teams with 119 points. Mason had 4 wrestlers place in the tournament including: 

1st---Chris Donathan 145 lbs
2nd---Kamal Adewumi 170 lbs
5th---Sam Glassco 132 lbs
8th---Owen Amburgy 182 lbs

Other wrestlers who competed in the tournament included: Noah Lippeatt, Brock Gibson, Nate D'Agostino, Elric Nijakowski, Jack Doran, Jared Glover and Marwan Sayed. 
12/28-12/29 Powerade Tourney    
Mason also traveled to the Powerade Tournament in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania on December 28th and 29th. Out of 52 teams competing, Mason finished in 15th place. This tournament is one of the best in the country and featured several top 50 teams in the country. Mason finished with 3 placers in the tournament: 

2nd---Chris Donathan 145 lbs
5th---Pacey Najdusak 106 lbs
6th---Kamal Adewumi 170 lbs

Other wrestlers who competed in the tournament included: 
Dominic Ditullio, Dante Ditullio, Davis Haller, Owen Amburgy, Jack Doran, Jake Arengo, and Marwan Sayed. 

1/5 @ Parkersburg South Classic Duals     This past weekend, the Comets traveled to Parkersburg South High School to compete in the South Classic Duals. The Comets went 5-0 on the day and won the tournament. Their highlight win was in the finals when they defeated the 29th nationally ranked Parkersburg South High School Patriots 35-33 in an intense back and forth dual. Final team scores were as follows: 
Mason vs. Barberton---39-32 win
Mason vs. Woodrow Wilson---52-18 win
Mason vs. Reserves---67-9 win
Mason vs. Spring Mills---62-15 win
Mason vs. Parkersburg South---35-33 win

Going undefeated on the afternoon was Pacey Nadjusak, Dom Ditullio, Sam Glassco, Chris Donathan, and Kamal Adewumi. Owen Amburgy and Noah Lippeatt each had 4 wins on the day. Other winners from the afternoon were Dante Ditullio, Nate D'Agostino, Elric Nijakowski, Jack Doran, Jake Arengo, and Marwan Sayed. 

 


Mason will travel to St. Paris Graham for a quad this upcoming weekend.

Next up, Mason will host the annual James Horning Wrestling match TONIGHT! This event has been scaled back to include just three teams and moved to this evening due to weekend weather concerns. Wrestling will begin at 6:00 pm. The event will be held in the MASON HIGH SCHOOL NEW GYM (previously held at the MM arena).

The Mason girls bowling team did well this past Saturday at the Big Blue Tourney. The team improved greatly from last year and finished right in the middle of the pack. There were certainly some good take aways from their first tournenament.

Julia Caldwell led the team with a 422 three game series. The team is looking forward to lots of good things this year.

Mason Girls will look to improve their season by defeating Hamilton this Monday at Mason Bowl.

Mason bowling teams participated in the Holiday tournament at Western Bowl this past Saturday.
The girls made terrific improvements and were led by seniors Dianna Cravens and Julia Caldwell.

The girls team finished 20th out of 32 teams.

The Mason girls bowling team continues to work hard and compete but fell to Seton on Mondy. The team did beat New Richmond in the tri-match event.  Girls JV team was thrilled with their first victory of the year over Setons JV squad.

The Comet boys bowling team participated in the Big Blue tourney at Fairfield Lanes this past Saturday.

The team started off well and were 3rd after the 1st and 2nd rounds. Third round and championship round were a struggle and they fell to 7th place overall. It was a good day to learn a lot about themselves and what they need to work on to improve.

The individual leaders were Kian Encarnacion with a 634 three game series and Danian Sauer followed with a 622.

The boys will look to improve on their first start of the season by defeating Hamilton this Monday at Mason Bowl.

12/9 @ Holiday Tourney @ Western Bowl         Boys Bowling participated in the Holiday Tourney at Western Bowl on Saturday. The team managed a 2nd place overall with a solid 208 overall average after 14 games.
Two members made the all tournament team!

With over 200 boys bowling, Kian Encarnacion and Damian Sauer both managed to get into the top 7 places. Damian had a terrific 467 series and Kian had a 472

The boys bowling team defeated New Richmond on Monday with solid performances from Jonathan Davis and Damian Sauer.

The team overall continues to improve as they will face a tough GMC foe, Fairfield, on Wednesday.

Mason Boys bowled in the Wright State Challenge this weekend, a college level tournament with a
very difficult pattern.  Only 6 Mason boys out of over 150 managed to shoot over 400 for two games.

Kian Encarnación managed a second place 417. Mason placed 4th overall in the placement round and finished third after knockouts.   It was a long 10 hours of bowling but they all performed well.
